What is SA Logbook?
SA Logbook is a SARS travel logbook app for Android, made in South Africa by KindlyMade Apps. It records your drives automatically by GPS, lets you swipe to mark each one business or private, and turns them into a SARS-format logbook (PDF and CSV) for each tax year, from 1 March to the end of February.
Is SA Logbook on Google Play yet?
Not yet. We're aiming to launch on Google Play before 1 March 2027, so you can record your opening odometer for the 2027/28 tax year on day one. Join the launch list and we'll email you the day it's live.
How much will it cost?
SA Logbook Pro will be R30 a month or R299 a year (about R24.92 a month), with a free trial to start. People on the launch list who subscribe as founding members can lock in R30 a month for life. Prices are in rand; Google Play handles billing.
Does SARS accept an electronic logbook from an app?
Yes. SARS says it accepts electronic logbooks as an acceptable record, as long as the logbook has the information SARS asks for (see the SARS eLogbook 2026-27). SA Logbook's PDF follows the columns of the official SARS eLogbook. SA Logbook is not affiliated with or endorsed by SARS.
What does a SARS logbook need to show?
Your odometer reading on 1 March and on the last day of February, your total and business kilometres, and for every business trip: the date, the kilometres travelled, where you started, where you went and the reason. Private trips don't need details. A separate logbook is needed for each vehicle. Read our SARS logbook requirements guide.
Is driving from home to work business travel?
No. SARS treats travel between your home and your place of work as private travel, so it can't be claimed. SA Logbook marks trips between your saved Home and Work places as private by default and tells you why.
How long must I keep my logbook?
SARS says you must keep your logbook for at least five years from the date you submit your return, because SARS may ask for it to check your claim. SA Logbook keeps your logbook backed up in the cloud so it's still there years later, even on a new phone.
What is the SARS rate per km for 2026/27?
The simplified rate is R4.95 per kilometre for the 2026/27 tax year (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027), set in Government Gazette 54228. It applies to per-km reimbursements when no other vehicle allowance is paid. See our SARS rate per km guide for the full cost table.
Will the app drain my battery?
SA Logbook is designed to use GPS only while you're driving and to rest when you're parked, using Android's activity recognition to notice when a drive starts. We'll share real battery numbers from our road tests before launch.
Does it work without signal?
Yes. Recording trips, marking them business or private and adding trips by hand all work offline. Everything syncs to your cloud backup when you're back in signal.
What happens to my data if I stop paying?
Your data is never held hostage. If you cancel, you keep your history, your cloud copy and CSV export of everything, and you can still add trips by hand.
Do you sell my location data?
Never. Your location is used only to build your logbook. We don't sell or share personal data with advertisers or data brokers, and there are no ads. Read our privacy policy.
Is there an iPhone version?
Not at launch. SA Logbook starts on Android. Join the launch list and tell us if you'd like an iPhone version.
Can my tax practitioner use the export?
Yes. You can share the SARS-format PDF and the CSV straight from your phone to your tax practitioner, by email or WhatsApp.
